Vitamin B12 is a integral to the healthy human body. It is a water soluble vitamin which is found in foods like lean red meat, fish, poultry and dairy products. B12 needs to be consumed and absorbed by the body every day to promote health. In most cases a balanced diet will contain the B12 vitamin needed to maintain health unless there is an absorption problem. Vegan diets, however, may not provide adequate amounts of vitamin B12.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 deficiency is often associated with the autoimmune disease called pernicious anemia which is fatal without treatment. The role of Vitamin B12 is crucial in the production of red blood cells. All of the body systems are affected by a reduction of red blood cells that carry oxygen. One of the most frequent indicators that there may be a vitamin B12 deficiency is an abnormal CBC or Complete Blood Count that is commonly ordered when we see a doctor for a physical examination.

B12 Deficiency Symptoms

Listlessness. lightheaded and fatigue all the time that is not explained – for example a new mom may be chronically tired which would more likely be related to the demands of parenting

Unexplained muscle weakness, loss of balance and tingling in the arms and legs as if they had fallen “asleep”

Itchiness, tingling, or stinging pain on the tongue or palms and outer edges of the hand

White spots most often found on the skin of the outer aspects of the forearm

Sores or cracked skin at the corners of the mouth which may extend to the edge of the lip line

Migraine headache often preceded by temporary mid vision blind spots or zigzag streaks in the vision.

Eye twitching which is annoying but not usually painful

Mild to severe memory loss, disorientation or problems concentrating

Mild to severe memory loss, disorientation or problems concentrating

Skin pallor

B12 deficiency symptoms are not clear cut and easily related to B12. The reason for that is the symptoms that are common to many other disease processes or deficiencies. Deficiency develops over time and the symptoms may be mild and overlooked until they become more severe or problematic.

Vitamina B12

There is no specific definitive test that says you are B12 deficient. Blood levels are an indication but are not absolutely definitive. Several blood tests may be required to pinpoint B12 as the cause. Often it is a process of elimination and you should always consult your physician. There are no known side effects to taking large doses of this vitamin. Supplementation is a safe and quick alternative to a tedious process of ruling out all of the possible causes for your symptoms if they are mild. If you feel better when you take the supplement, you were likely deficient If you don’t feel better or notice a significant improvement then keep on searching for the cause.

B12

B 12 is found in the foods we eat and a well balanced diet is usually sufficient to maintain adequate levels in the body. Problems with absorption or a strict vegan diet can severely affect the ability of the body to maintain adequate blood levels. Treatment to raise the levels may include supplementing the diet with B12 injections or vitamin supplements. When left untreated serious complications like nerve damage or coma can develop over time. It is always a good practice to consult your physician whenever you notice symptoms of ill health.

Research has shown that vitamin B 12 is extremely important for the normal performance of our brains and nervous system. This particular vitamin is naturally present in a number of foods, can be added to others and also available as a supplement.

This particular vitamin is found in animal products such as meat, poultry, milk products, eggs and fish. It is usually not found in plant food but some food producers do fortify their breakfast cereals with it.

It is very important that we get the recommended amount of this vitamin. If we do not get enough, some of the effects could be nerve damage, failing memory, muscle weakness and depression. If young children to not get enough of the vitamin, it could result in stunted growth.

Researchers now know that this vitamin also plays a vital role in the body’s ability to make red blood cells. As well, it plays a role in the lowering of homocysteine, which, if too high, has been linked to heart disease and heart attacks.

If you do not think you are getting enough of vitamin B-12 then you should consider taking it in a supplement form. Our body needs it and we have to take care of ourselves.

Vitamins

The human body is reliant on a certain level of nutrients for optimal health. Vitamins, minerals and other trace elements in the right proportions can help to keep disease at bay and ensure that the body is functioning optimally.

Ideally we should be able to get all the vitamins and minerals our bodies need from the food we eat, unfortunately this is not always possible. In this modern day and age not only do we consume processed foods that are devoid of any natural nutrients, but even our fresh food is grown or reared on soil that is mineral deficient.

So why is it so important to ensure we have our optimal intake of vitamins and minerals? Each of these nutrients has a specific role to play in the body.

•	Vitamin A is needed for eye health and skin health. It is an antioxidant vitamin that is used for protein synthesis and is also important for the healthy function of lung tissue.
•	Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) is needed for the production of HCl (hydrochloric Acid) blood formation, and carbohydrate metabolism. It is also needed fore normal muscle tone of the intestines, stomach and heart.
•	Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) is needed for red blood cell formation, antibody production, cell respiration and growth and it facilitates O2 (oxygen) use in the body
•	Vitamin B3 (Niacin) is needed for the correct function of the nervous system, the metabolism of carbohydrates and the production of HCl. It is also needed for the synthesis of sex hormones.
•	Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is involved in almost all body systems and organ functions, including activating many enzymes. It aids B12 absorption, immune function and antibody production and also helps to regulate oestrogen and inhibits homocysteine
•	Vitamin B12 aids in cell formation and cellular longevity. It prevents anaemia, aids digestion and absorption of food. It is essential for a healthy nervous system and also maintains fertility and promotes normal growth and development
•	Vitamin C is an antioxidant. Its primary role is the formation of collagen. It is also important for growth and repair of body tissue cells, gums, blood vessels, bones and teeth. It aids in the absorption of iron and helps reduce LDL’s ( bad cholesterol) It is also a natural anti inflammatory and anti histamine.
•	Vitamin D also known as the sunshine vitamin protects bones and preserves muscle tone. It is essential for calcium and phosphorus metabolism and regulates cell growth, immunity and energy metabolism
•	Vitamin E is fat a soluble antioxidant with particular affinity to the cardiovascular system. It is involved in helping maintain normal cholesterol levels, the integrity of the cell wall, the health of capillary walls, the integrity of red blood cells as well as controlling the clotting of blood. It is also responsible for healthy skin and a healthy reproductive system.

So as you can see vitamins are essential for our health and well being and it is vital that we get an optimal amount of each of these vitamins on a daily basis

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is a member of the vitamin B complex group, all of which are vital for mental health. Deficiency in any of the 8 B vitamins will very quickly affect the way you feel and think. These B vitamins are water soluble and rapidly pass out of the body and so we need to replenish them on a daily basis. The B vitamin group tend to work synergistically so it is advisable to take them in a complex. If you feel you need an extra amount of any of the B vitamin group then make sure you take it in conjunction with a B Complex formula.

Vitamin B 12 is one such vitamin that is often supplemented alongside a B complex supplement. Vitamin B12’s primary functions include the formation of red blood cells and the maintenance of a healthy nervous system. It is also necessary for the synthesis of DNA during cell division.

Vitamin B12 is found primarily in meat, eggs and diary products. It has been suggested that B12 is also found in fermented soy and seaweed products, however, although this may be the case, it is unclear as to how available this plant source is to the human body. Those on a vegetarian diet may well find that their diets are deficient in this essential vitamin and may need to consider supplementation,

Vegans need to make sure that the foods in their diet are fortified with vitamin B12. For example foods such as marmite, or other yeast extracts, breakfast cereals and textured vegetable protein are fortified with vitamin B12

If you are experiencing lack of energy, exhaustion, irritability, forgetfulness or brain fog, you could be suffering from Vitamin B12 deficiency. This deficiency may be caused by a lack of B12 in your diet, however it could be caused by stress, which increases our demand for B12. In addition our ability to absorb B vitamins in general declines after the age of 40, so supplementation may be advisable once you have reached this age.

Occasionally B12 deficiency can be caused by digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, colitis or gastric reflux, all of which inhibit the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 from the foods they eat.

Healthy choices are not always easy to make. We live in a society that values fast food and immediate gratification. Changing how we think about our body and the things we put into it can be challenging, especially if you really like the taste or texture of a particular food. Starting with one or two changes will be less overwhelming when you are committed to making healthy choices.

Healthy choices have taken on a new life as wellness campaigns and prevention strategies are promoted in a variety of ways. It is not uncommon to see or hear television and radio commentaries on the benefits of making healthy choices in all areas of your life.

Ongoing research proves and then expands on the health benefits of natural products. Our ancestors knew from experience that certain foods and habits were beneficial for staying healthy. They did not know why, just that they were good practices to follow. Science is now unearthing the explanations and proof for the extensive practical knowledge that was handed down generation after generation.

Breakthroughs and new information is so abundant, it is sometimes difficult to keep up. The Internet has helped to keep people informed of up to date information from the latest scientific studies and research that can improve your health and wellness. Readily available information at your fingertips has more and more people making healthy choices.
